Workshops.

Dr. Gillian Scott-Ward leads customized film screenings and workshops for your organization. We provide Mind-Body Healing Centered Workshops, Anti-Bias training, and more.

We work in consultation with high schools, colleges, social organizations, corporations and religious organization.

Our goals including improving community members sense of belonging, deepening compassion and empathy, as well as improving self-awareness and coping skills. Our workshops are holistic, and support development of a deeper understanding about how stress (inclusive of, but not limited to, discrimination) impacts the body and ways to use mindfulness, Meridian tapping, body movement, and other techniques to regain balance, self-(and other)advocate, and live in alignment.

Our Back to Natural Film screening & workshop on Natural Hair Bias for the NYC Commission on Human Rights played a critical role in inspiring New York City to become the first jurisdiction, world-wide, to adopt new rules protecting against discrimination related to hair textures & hairstyles.

Healing Workshops

Healing Workshops explore how natural hair is uniquely entangled with identity, authenticity & self-love. Participants are invited to explore their relationship with naturally textured hair with curiosity and compassion. Participants explore the impact and power of early life messages on our relationship to our hair & how to harness the power of self-talk to improve self-esteem. Attendees will get the opportunity to analyze the impact of the media on our internalized beliefs and learn affirming language to use with ourselves and others when describing naturally kinky and curly hair.

Workshop goals may also include understanding the impact of beauty products on the body and explore how Black people are exposed to more toxic chemicals when trying to meet beauty standards that are counter to our natural body.

A major contributor to health disparities in Black communities is related to the impact of race-related stress on the body. Attendee's  will come to understand the impact of racial discrimination related stress on functioning and the body and learn concrete interventions for healing like cognitive-behavioral techniques, breathwork, and EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique), also known as meridian tapping. All audience members will leave with a personalized healing plan and concrete healing tools.

Participants are offered a unique, healing space to share and connect with others about what is an often complex relationship with natural hair.

Anti-Bias and Professional Workshops

Our renown Anti-Bias Workshops uses the film as a jumping off point to increase personal exploration and awareness of the way natural hair bias impacts our lives. The workshop allows participants to think critically about our perceptions of what are “acceptable” “professional”, “attractive” and “desirable” hairstyles and explores the factors that influence the development of those beliefs. It provides concrete ideas, tools and suggestions to support a lasting change in implicit (unconscious) and explicit (conscious) bias for participants individually and within our organizations. Participants will learn bias reduction strategies, focusing on ways to challenge internalized stereotyping, increase contact with different groups, and define ways to take responsibility for implicit bias by using a variety of strategies.

Our Professional Space Workshops connect freedom of hair choice and authenticity in presentation to work performance, success, and improvements in morale and work-culture.
